Top 5 Fashion Mistakes that Women Make: Are you guilty?
This article is written by Mindy, our resident fashionista. Mindy has more than 10 years experience in clothing design. She has taught many women throughout Utah how to present themselves beautifully.
There are so many fashion crimes committed every day that it is hard to narrow it down to just 5. That said, here are my top fashion no-no’s:
1: Clothing that doesn’t fit properly.
-
- Too Big? You’re not hiding anything by trying to mask your little baby bulge with that over-sized sweatshirt. Loose fitting clothing only makes you look heavier overall. Not to mention it takes away any womanly shape you have hiding underneath there.
- An easy test for shirts: look at the shoulder seam in the mirror. If you were to draw an imaginary line from your armpit to the corner of your shoulder, that is where the shoulder seam should lie. If it is off your shoulder and on your arm, your clothing is too big for you.
- An easy test for pants: When you stand up, the crotch of your pants should be within an inch of your anatomical crotch. From behind, you should be able to see the curve of your rear without any baggy fabric. When you try on clothes, your goal is to get clothes to skim your body.
- Too Small? Just because you can fit into it doesn’t mean it fits. The muffin top hanging over your skin tight jeans you wore in college is not attractive. As we get older and have babies our bodies change–know that you won’t be able to wear the styles that a 16-year old body can wear.
- An easy test: the next time you try on one of your daughters shirts try touching your head with two hands. If your skin shows, it’s too small.
2: Saggy Girls.
-
- Even if you don’t have a large chest, you must wear a good bra. If your bra has more then 6 months of wear it’s probably not doing its job any more.
-
- An easy way to test: while wearing a bra, try to lift your chest. If you can lift it more than an inch, your bra isn’t giving you enough support. If you have a very large chest, your bra mantra should be “lock & load.” You need support! Get fitted for a new bra at Victoria’s Secret or Nordstrom.
-
- Tip: If you hate to bra shop like every women I know, get fitted and buy multiples of the same bra you love. Rotate between them often. You should have a minimum of 3 to 5 bras.
-
- If the thought of spending money on something no one else sees makes you cringe, consider the fact that a perfectly fitted bra will instantly make you look 5 to 10 pounds slimmer. That is worth $50!
3: Over accessorizing or under accessorizing.
-
- Do you find yourself wearing red shoes with matching bracelet, earrings, necklace and topping it off with that dreaded red flower you borrowed from your daughters collection? Next time stop at the red shoes! Try pairing them with silver earnings and a necklace.
- If you don’t wear any jewelry or accessories, add some. Just like a you wouldn’t make a cake and serve it without icing, don’t put together an outfit without adding a little bling. This should be the fun part!
4: Overdoing Trends.
-
- If you wear your any of the following on an almost daily basis you are guilty of being a Trend Killer:
-
- crochet head wrap,
- beaded watch,
- chunky necklace with your initial,
- blinged-out tee shirt,
- cow purse,
- cap with flower on it.
- or your PINK sweat capri/pants.
Give them a break and change it up once in while before you make that trend a FAD.
5: Dressing outside your age.
-
- If you are a mature women of 45+ wearing the styles made for a 20 year old, it will make you look older (like you wearing your daughter’s clothes). Unless you have had serious work done or spend all day in the gym, these styles generally won’t flatter your body either. Respect yourself, respect your body, and respect your age. There is nothing wrong with dressing like you are 45 when you are, in fact, 45.
- When you are in your 20′s or 30′s why are you dressing like a 70 year old school marm? If you can imagine your mom wearing your clothes and no one making a comment, you are dressing too old.
This may seem a bit harsh, but a lot of Utah Valley women need a reality check on their wardrobes. Your clothing should flatter you and make you feel beautiful. If you are doing one of the mistakes above, you are probably using clothing to hide yourself or disguise yourself.
I would love to help you learn to build a beautiful wardrobe that complements beautiful you, no matter what your age, shape, or size.
